Around the world, there are professionals operating at the top of their fields, making important advances and propelling clients to new heights. LA Wire celebrates these trailblazers and innovators, who often sacrifice their free time and their sleep to further their contributions to their industries.
Whether it be a doctor who brings care to a remote island; a pediatrician changing hospital standards on a national level; a business coach who has guided tens of thousands of entrepreneurs; or a Filipino advertising executive earning international acclaim; each of these professionals has found a way to leave their mark on the world.
- Dr. Peter Brett, Northern Marianas Oncology Center
After spending more than 25 years practicing Oncology in private practice in Northern California, Dr. Peter Brett relocated to the island of Saipan, deep in the South Pacific. Saipan is part of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), which has a total population of roughly 50,000 residents.
When Dr. Pete Brett arrived in Saipan 2019, cancer care in the CNMI was nonexistent. All cancer patients were referred off-island to the Philippines, Guam, Hawaii, or the mainland US. Under Dr. Brett’s direction and watchful eye, the Northern Marianas Oncology Center was built from the ground up. It is now fully staffed and treating patients using chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted cancer treatment medicines, and simple surgeries.
Dr. Peter Brett has also been a driving force in creating the Cancer and Associated Risks Early Screening (CARES) program, which is a free cancer testing program for all residents of the CNMI.
- Dr. Louis Hampers, Emergency Pediatrician
Dr. Louis Hampers completed his dual MD and MBA degrees at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the Wharton School in 1992. His first hospital rotation was in Pediatrics, and he was surprised by how he fell in love with the specialty. He went on to complete his pediatric residency training before taking a year-long assignment at a mission hospital in Kenya in 1995-1996.
Upon his return to the US, Dr. Louis Hampers relocated to Chicago to complete his Emergency Pediatrics fellowship at Children’s Memorial Hospital. He began to conduct medical research and design studies, focusing on language barriers in medicine, variation in physician practice patterns, urgent care and fast-track medicine, febrile seizures, tropical medicine, and substance abuse treatment.
Because of Dr. Louis Hampers’ research, interpreters are now available in hospitals across the country, increasing patient satisfaction, decreasing visit costs, and shortening patient stays in emergency departments.

- Herbert Hernandez, GIGIL
While Herbert Hernandez is still building his reputation in the United States, he is a household name in the Philippines. In addition to co-founding a major independent advertising agency, GIGIL, he is a bonafide rock star, playing lead guitar for Filipino bands Moonstar88 and 6cyclemind. His songwriting talents have received national recognition.
Hernandez spent 14 years climbing the corporate ladder in advertising at several big-name firms before branching out on his own with one of his idols, Badong Abesamis. In 2017 the two founded GIGIL and found immediate success with their disruptive and innovative campaigns.
In addition to his lucrative day job and nightly gigs with his bands, Herbert Hernandez is a dedicated husband and father to three children. He has big aspirations to expand GIGIL into other countries while elevating Filipino talent to the forefront of the world stage.
LA Wire recognizes that while the contributions of these professionals span a variety of industries and continents, they are all working to change the landscape of their professions. We may all have the same 24 hours in a day, but it’s safe to say that these four have found a way to maximize their time that most of us haven’t. Keep up the good work!
