World Cup: How things stands in the groups

After beating Wales 3-0, England moved on to the round of 16 in the World Cup. But Rob Page’s team had to return home on the next plane.

On Saturday, December 3, the United States will play the Netherlands at 15:00 GMT, and on Sunday, December 4, England will play Senegal at 19:00 GMT.

When France beat Denmark 2-1, they were the first team to move on to the round of 16. When they beat Switzerland 1-0, Brazil joined them.

Portugal also got in because, on Monday, they beat Uruguay 2-0. So both Group A and Group B were done on Tuesday.

On the other hand, the hosts, Qatar, Canada, and Ecuador, have been kicked out.

As the group stage ends, we look at how things are going.

How the world cup groups A and B stands

The Netherlands beat Qatar, which was hosting the group, 2-0, to win Group A and move on to the round of 16. They’ve been in the final three times.

Senegal beat Ecuador and advanced to the next round. This was only their second time in the knockout round. In 2002, they made it to the quarterfinals.

Group B: England breezed into the round of 16 with a 3-0 win over Wales. On the other hand, Wales came in last in their group and had to leave.

With a 1-0 win over Iran, which only needed a point to move on, the USA passed England and moved into second place.

Fight to the end

Group C: Poland and Argentina are at the top of the group after beating Saudi Arabia and Mexico 2-0 on Saturday.

But they play each other in the group-deciding game on Wednesday, so either Lionel Messi or Robert Lewandowski could be out.

Poland will move on if the game ends in a tie, but if Argentina wins, they will move on. Both teams will move on if both games end in a tie.

If Saudi Arabia beats Mexico, it will be a big surprise if they move on to the next round.

Group D: Kylian Mbappe scored two goals to help France beat Denmark 2-1. France moved on to the next round because of this.

Les Bleus could add any of the other three teams.

If Australia beats Denmark, they’ll be through, but if they tie, Tunisia could move up to second place if they beat France. So Denmark needs to win if it wants to keep going.

Group E: Even though Germany and Spain tied 1-1 on Sunday, all four teams in Group E can still make it to the next round.

Thursday at 19:00 GMT, Costa Rica will play Germany, and Japan will play Spain. This section ends with these games.

Spain will win the group if the other game ends in a tie or if Germany wins.

Possible twists and turns

Canada scored its first-ever World Cup goal on Sunday, but their joy didn’t last long because Croatia scored four goals to knock them out of the running for the last 16.

Croatia is now in first place in Group F because they scored the most goals. They know that they will make the cut if they don’t lose to Belgium. If their result is the same as Morocco’s and they keep their better goal difference, they will be in first place.

Morocco will move on to the next round if they win or tie their last group game against Canada.

Belgium will move on to the next round if they beat Croatia.

Brazil top Group G

On Monday, Casemiro scored with seven minutes left to help Brazil beat Switzerland 1-0 and move on to the next round of the World Cup.

Tite’s team only needs one point from their last game against Cameroon to win first place in Group G when the last two games are played.

The other three teams could join Brazil in the round of 16.

Switzerland is in second place, so they must beat Serbia to ensure they move on. If Cameroon didn’t beat Brazil, Switzerland would only need one point.

Serbia and Cameroon must win their games if they want to make it to the knockout rounds of the World Cup.

Group H: With a 2-0 win over Uruguay on Monday, Portugal joined France and Brazil in moving on to the next round with a game in hand.

When they play South Korea on Friday, they need a point to ensure first place in the group.

Ghana will move on to the next round of 16 if they beat Uruguay. But a tie will also do if South Korea doesn’t beat Portugal by two or more goals.

If Portugal loses and Ghana wins, the top spot will depend on goals each team has scored and conceded.
