Twenty years ago, Kathryn Starke was an elementary school teacher with a passion for literacy and a story in her heart. Today, she’s the founder and CEO of Creative Minds Publications, a publishing company that has made a significant impact in classrooms, libraries, and communities in over 26 countries across six continents.

As she celebrates a milestone anniversary in 2025, Starke reflects on her journey from first-time author to literacy leader—and what’s next for a company that aims to “teach the world to read.”

From Classroom to Company

The idea for Creative Minds Publications began with a single book: Amy’s Travels, a multicultural children’s story based on a friend who had lived on five of the seven continents. Starke wrote the book as a classroom tool for teaching geography and cultural diversity. But getting it published? That was another story.

“I initially started Creative Minds Publications to publish and market Amy’s Travels,” she recalls. “I never imagined it would grow into what it is today.”

With no formal background in publishing or business, Starke leaned into what she did know: education, literacy, and the power of storytelling. That foundation remains central to her company’s mission.

“Our mission has always focused on children and teachers—to teach the world to read. Today, we help even more authors bring their books to life.”

What started as a one-woman venture is now a trusted publishing house supporting diverse voices, educational tools, and literacy-centered stories that inspire.

Creativity and Strategy in Harmony

As both a bestselling author of six books and a publisher of many more, Starke lives at the intersection of creativity and commerce—a balance she’s learned to embrace over the years.

“Personally, I only write when I’m inspired or have an important story to tell,” she says. “I’ve built a business that thrives on creativity, but also one that’s strategic and intentional.”

That blend of inspiration and execution is a through-line in her work. As a former literacy leader in schools, Starke is well-versed in timelines, accountability, and results. Her approach to publishing is no different.

“We specifically choose books and authors that we believe we can creatively market and develop campaigns around,” she explains. “Being organized, disciplined, and resourceful has helped me navigate both the creative and business sides of publishing.”

Lessons in Visibility and Voice

Reflecting on her early days as an entrepreneur, Starke admits there’s one lesson she learned the hard way: the power of self-promotion.

“I was hesitant about social media in the beginning. Facebook was the only platform at the time, and I didn’t feel comfortable posting about myself or my accomplishments,” she shares.

But as the industry evolved, so did her mindset.

“I’ve learned that no one’s going to share your story if you don’t do it yourself. Today, we’re active on Instagram and LinkedIn, and it’s been a great way to connect with supporters and readers.”

Her advice to aspiring authors and entrepreneurs? Don’t wait to be discovered. Own your voice, share your wins, and let your community celebrate alongside you.

Books That Build Impact
Over the past two decades, Starke has written six books, contributed to dozens of articles, and helped countless others share their stories. But when asked which book she’s most proud of, her answer is clear: Amy’s Travels still holds a special place in her heart.

“Children’s books are timeless,” she says. “There’s always a new reader to introduce a book to, and always someone who reads a favorite book over and over again.”

Amy’s Travels is used in classrooms every year and continues to serve as a gateway to geography, multiculturalism, and empathy. But it’s not her only legacy.

Starke’s book A Touchdown in Reading: An Educator’s Guide to Literacy Instruction was recognized as one of the “notable resources for teaching kids to read” and has been implemented in over 200 schools.

“That book was written for educators, to empower them with tools that actually work,” she says. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to know it’s making a difference.”

Beyond her books, Starke has become a sought-after voice in literacy advocacy. She founded the Tackle Reading initiative, which partners with the NFL to inspire children nationwide, and in 2026 she will help celebrate its 10th anniversary with players reading to classrooms across the country. She also took her message to a global stage, speaking at the World Literacy Summit at Oxford, where leaders from around the world convened to address the urgent need for literacy. For Starke, these milestones represent the culmination of her mission: connecting education, community, and global impact through the power of reading.

Looking Ahead: 20 Books for 20 Years

To mark the company’s 20th anniversary, Creative Minds Publications is taking on one of its ambitious projects yet: publishing 20 new books in 2025.

“We’re currently accepting submissions—no agent required—to be considered as one of the twenty titles,” Starke shares. “We’re focused on building our catalog and expanding our imprint.”

The goal isn’t just volume; it’s visibility. Starke wants to increase reviews, awards, and media coverage for her authors and their books—helping them reach wider audiences with stories that matter.

“We’re committed to supporting our writers and promoting literacy around the world,” she says. “That’s been our mission since day one, and it’s only growing stronger.”

The Legacy of Literacy

Twenty years is a rare milestone in the publishing world—especially for an independent company rooted in education. But Kathryn Starke’s success is no accident. It’s the result of vision, resilience, and an unwavering belief in the power of reading.

“Success in publishing isn’t about luck. It’s about showing up with purpose, every single day,” she says. “Whether you’re a writer, a teacher, or a parent—you have the ability to spark a love of reading that lasts a lifetime.”

And for Starke, that’s what it’s all about.

As Creative Minds Publications enters its next chapter, one thing remains clear: Kathryn Starke isn’t just building books—she’s building a movement.
