There are some stories that deserve more than a headline.
They deserve space.
They deserve honesty.
They deserve to be told by the people who lived them.
That’s exactly what unfolded on IMRU Radio, the long-running LGBTQ+ program airing on KPFK 90.7 FM, when it dedicated a special episode to honoring the life of actress, writer, and Marine veteran Dee Freeman.
Broadcast just days after Freeman’s passing on April 2, 2026, the episode didn’t rush to summarize her life. It slowed down to reflect on it.
A Tribute Told Through Love

Hosted by Michael Taylor Gray, the 30-minute broadcast chose a deeply personal direction. Instead of leading with career highlights or industry accolades, the focus shifted to the people who knew Dee best, specifically her children, Amber Freeman and Shane Freeman.
What followed was not a typical radio segment.
It was a conversation layered with emotion, honesty, and remembrance.
Amber and Shane shared what it was like to walk alongside their mother during her six-month battle with stage 4 lung cancer. They spoke about caregiving, not as an abstract idea, but as a lived experience filled with difficult moments, quiet strength, and unconditional love.
Through their voices, listeners were given something far more meaningful than a biography.
They were given Dee.
A Life Beyond the Credits
Dee Freeman’s career was extensive, spanning more than 80 stage productions, as well as television and film appearances, including her recent role on Tyler Perry’s Sistas. Her work reflected depth, discipline, and a commitment to her craft.
But what resonated most during the IMRU tribute wasn’t the résumé.
It was the woman behind it.
Her children spoke about her resilience. Her faith. Her ability to maintain perspective even in the face of a life-altering diagnosis. There was a sense that, while her time was cut short, her life was never unfinished.
According to her publicist, Desirae L. Benson, “Dee Freeman was more than an actress; she was a light. Even in her hardest moments, she led with faith, strength, and a spirit that made everyone around her feel seen and loved. Her legacy isn’t just in her work, it’s in how she lived.”
She undoubtedly lived it fully. And that truth echoed throughout the episode.
The Power of the Right Platform

For over five decades, IMRU Radio has remained a consistent and trusted voice within the LGBTQ+ community. Broadcasting weekly on KPFK 90.7 FM and reaching audiences nationwide through affiliate stations and digital streaming platforms, the show has built its legacy on authenticity.
This tribute was a reflection of that mission.
There was no overproduction. No forced narrative. Just space. Space for grief, for reflection, and for truth.
Michael Taylor Gray guided the conversation with care, allowing Amber and Shane to speak freely while honoring the emotional weight of the moment. His approach reinforced what IMRU has always stood for: storytelling that centers people, not performance.
More Than a Moment
What made this episode stand out wasn’t just who it honored, but how it honored them.
It acknowledged that loss is not one-dimensional. That grief and gratitude can coexist. That a life well-lived leaves behind more than memories. It leaves an impact.
And that impact was clear.
Listeners weren’t just hearing about Dee Freeman’s passing. They were hearing about her life, through laughter, through reflection, through the kind of honesty that can’t be scripted.
A Story That Continues
For those who were unable to listen live, the episode remains accessible through KPFK’s archives, ensuring that Dee Freeman’s story continues to reach new ears and new hearts.
Because that’s what meaningful storytelling does.
It doesn’t end when the broadcast is over.
It carries forward.
And through IMRU Radio, through her children, and through the space created for her story to be told the right way, Dee Freeman’s voice and everything she stood for remain present.
Out loud.
Out proud.
And not forgotten.
