Glossophobia is the fear of public speaking and is a common form of anxiety, affecting 73% of the world population. The fact that the ability to effectively deliver a speech that is clear and concise in an impactful way is uncommon makes Anthony Hyland all the more impressive. A wordsmith by his own merit, he is a professional public speaker with more than six years of experience under his belt.
Aside from public speaking, his skill extends to other areas of wordplay as well. A recording artist and performer of the craft, spoken word poetry has been his oldest practice of over 15 years. It had been a source of comfort and served as an outlet in his troubled early years, allowing him to cope and overcome life’s trials and tribulations through wordcraft.
Currently residing in Honolulu, Hawaii, with his wife, Natasha, and his three children, he upholds the duties and responsibilities of a United States Naval Sailor as a Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class. While he is living a good life with his family, his childhood has been a difficult one. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the first five years of his life were spent bouncing from home to home in foster care.
The injustices that life had thrown at him, including being a victim to a sexual assault, had instilled in him a wave of deep-rooted anger and pain that he later opted to turn into passion. That served as his primary motivating force to prove that his past doesn’t make who he is, and he later graduated as high school valedictorian and went off to college on a full four-year scholarship.
The Purpose of Power: Maximizing Your Full Potential is Anthony’s first published book as an author and entrepreneur, and it gives reference to his past experiences, showing that adversities should not define one’s life journey, but instead must be utilized to fuel one’s dreams.
Having graduated from the illustrious Voorhees College in Denmark with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications, as well as a Certificate of Completion from the Harvard Business School Online for Entrepreneurship Essentials, he takes pride in his curricular and extracurricular accomplishments in college. He became the Freshman Class President of his year, and the third Vice President of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored people in his sophomore year.
Even as a professional, he is ever drawn to the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, where he sought to continue the legacy of excellence by serving as President of the Eta Iota Chapter in his junior and senior years, and he typically reaches out to them to speak on leadership, networking, goal-setting, and perseverance through life’s hardships.
In the future, he aspires to travel the world full-time, empowering students, companies, and employees to venture into the world of public speaking and develop the confidence in them to get them going. His experiences allow him to connect to people on a more personal level, and he hopes to maximize that connection by altering the trajectory of one’s life through empowerment and ultimately contributing to the betterment of the world.
Many of us seek to develop ourselves, and sometimes empowerment from an external source is all that is needed to catalyze growth.
