A Silent Cry from the Ocean: Art Confronts the Plight of Endangered Species
December 2024 – After receiving a significant public response, the art series The Lost Planet has shifted its focus to highlight the beauty of nature and address ecological concerns present in the world. This series has gained support and popularity among the global art community. It has been showcased at various events, fairs, and solo/group exhibitions in numerous countries, including France, Italy, Spa, the UK, the US, the UAE, India, China, and South Korea. The series has also received support from charitable organizations such as Plastic Oceans Europe, Earthwatch Europe, World Wildlife Fund, and Better World Fund. Auction houses such as Phillips and Christie’s have sold artworks supporting charitable initiatives, with the proceeds going towards these causes.
Artist, philanthropist, art collector, and environmentalist Natalia Kapchuk has completed work on her latest mixed-media art project, The Lost Animals. Continuing to explore the forces of human activity and its impacts on our majestic lands and oceans, Kapchuk pushes her artistic approach and continues experimenting with mediums to develop portrayals in her signature style.
This visually striking and emotionally charged art series addresses one of our time’s most urgent environmental crises—the rapid decline and looming extinction of the planet’s critically endangered species. Kapchuk, an artist and eco-activist, brings global attention to this crisis through a mixed-media collection of sculptures dedicated to a species listed on The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List.
The Lost Animals is more than an art project; it is a call to action. Each sculpture in the series represents a unique endangered species and is a powerful advocacy tool for their protection and conservation. Meticulously crafted, Kapchuk’s works result from years of detailed research into these vulnerable marine creatures’ habitats and life histories. The artist’s dedication is apparent in the intricate craftsmanship of each piece, which incorporates recycled fiberglass, flocking techniques, hand detailing, and electroplating to create a visually stunning and texturally rich experience.
Kapchuk’s sculptures vividly capture the beauty and fragility of each species, offering a poignant reminder of the threats they face due to human activity. The impact of commercial fishing, poaching, pollution, and the degradation of marine ecosystems is woven into the narrative of each piece, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all life on Earth and the need for urgent action.
“The diversity, beauty, grace, and mystery of our planet’s marine life have deeply inspired me,” says Kapchuk. “Unfortunately, many species face dramatic population declines and potential extinction, largely due to human activities. Through The Lost Animals series, I aim to confront these critical threats and awaken viewers to the heartbreaking realities our wildlife faces. I hope this work will foster a greater commitment to conservation and protection.“
Among the species depicted in The Lost Animals are the Blue Whale, Great Hammerhead Shark, Hawksbill Sea Turtle, Spinetail Devil Ray, Spotted Seahorse, Green Humphead Parrotfish, Great White Shark, Killer Whale, and Sunflower Starfish. Each sculpture serves as a visual testament to these species’ immediate risks and underscores the need for collective, global action to prevent their extinction and preserve the fragile balance of Earth’s marine ecosystems.
In The Lost Animals, Natalia Kapchuk transforms the precarious situations of endangered species into a powerful visual and emotional experience. The project is both a personal manifesto and a public call for awareness, urging viewers to engage with these species’ challenges and contribute to their conservation.
An ambassador at both The Parliamentary Society of Arts, Fashion, and Sports (UK) and the Better World Fund (BWF) and a philanthropist supporting charities and organizations dedicated to protecting the world, Natalia Kapchuk is an artist specializing in the techniques of mixed media and assemblage.
The latest large-scale solo exhibition art project, The Lost Animals, is scheduled for early 2025 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
