Menina Fortunato is a name synonymous with dance excellence. With over 25 years in the industry, she has performed on television, in films, live shows, and commercials across more than 40 countries. Her journey from growing up at her father’s small dance studio in British Columbia to global stages and eventually to virtual classrooms is a testament to her adaptability and passion for dance.

Menina’s dance journey began in British Columbia, where her father was her first dance teacher. Growing up in a dance studio, Menina was surrounded by the art form from a young age. Her mother also played a significant role in shaping her career by starting a dance competition when Menina was just 13. This environment fostered Menina’s love for dance and set the stage for her future career.

By the age of 16, Menina knew she wanted to pursue dance professionally. A scholarship to train in Los Angeles solidified her decision. In 2001, she moved to LA, and within a month, she was working with Britney Spears on a Super Bowl Pepsi commercial. This was just the beginning of her illustrious career, which included tours with Earth, Wind & Fire, and performances with stars like Beyoncé and Luke Bryan.

Challenges and Adaptations

Despite her early success, Menina faced significant challenges, particularly when she became a mother. The birth of her first child forced her to rethink her career. On tour with a show and a finalist on “So You Think You Can Dance Canada,” she had to step back due to her pregnancy. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life.

Adjusting to motherhood while trying to maintain a dance career was daunting. Menina found herself juggling auditions with breastfeeding and managing the demands of a newborn. It was during her first pregnancy that she created “Prenatal Dance,” a workout program for expecting mothers, which has been available on Amazon for over a decade.

The Pivot to Virtual Classes

The COVID-19 pandemic brought another significant shift. Menina, who had just given birth to her third child, found herself stuck at home with no work as live events were canceled. This period of isolation led her to innovate once again. She began teaching dance online from her bedroom, initially targeting moms with babies, offering a way for them to stay active and connected.

However, live classes proved challenging due to unpredictable baby schedules. This realization led Menina to develop pre-recorded, on-demand classes as well as virtual group coaching calls. One of her creations is her web app and launched a six-week challenge for moms and babies. The success of this program led to the creation of the Super Mom’s Boot Camp, a six-month transformational program aimed at moms of all ages.

A New Era of Dance Education

Menina’s adaptability has been a key element in not only sustaining her career but also enabling it to thrive in a changing world. Her innovative approach to dance education breaks the traditional mold, allowing her to connect with a diverse audience. This flexibility is evident as she pivots to cater not just to professional dancers but also to mothers looking for fitness solutions that fit into their busy schedules. Through her virtual classes, Menina has effectively broadened her reach, making dance accessible to women regardless of their geographic location or daily commitments.

As Menina releases the Hollywood Summer Tour for its 18th season, her adaptability shines through once more. This prestigious event, set in the competitive landscape of Los Angeles, isn’t just about dance; it’s a career accelerator crafted by Menina herself. The program highlights her forward-thinking by incorporating real-world experiences with top industry professionals and offering intensive training that reflects current trends in dance and entertainment.
