Constant monitoring has become a staple of home security systems in recent years. The latest security solutions allow homeowners to monitor video feeds at all hours from any location via mobile devices and can automatically detect when would-be intruders appear, sending immediate alerts to homeowners so they can respond accordingly.

To be truly safe, however, homes and other buildings must be equipped with continuous monitoring devices that can quickly and accurately detect and report levels of radon gas, such as a high-performance radon sensor. Known as the “silent killer,” radon is life-threatening airborne radiation that causes an estimated 21,000 lung cancer deaths annually in the US alone.

“Among scientists, the dangers of radon are well known,” says Insoo Park, CEO of Ecosense. “Outside of the scientific community, however, the same is not true. Few homeowners are aware of the deadly threat radon poses and how easy it can be to identify its presence.”

Based in the heart of Silicon Valley, Ecosense is an innovator in the radon gas detection and monitoring industry. Its intelligent and highly accurate digital radon detectors are used in homes, apartments, schools, and commercial buildings, providing users with unparalleled peace of mind. The company’s mission is to empower people to lead safe and healthy lifestyles free from the life-threatening danger posed by radon gas.

“It’s critical to recognize that the risk of lung cancer increases with every moment of exposure to high levels of radon gas,” Park warns. “Ecosense’s patented radon detection technology provides real-time and continuous radon  monitoring, giving you the assurance that you are constantly safeguarded against the risk of radon exposure.”

Unmasking the ‘silent killer’

Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is released naturally into the environment when the radioactive element radium decomposes. Most soils and rocks contain at least trace amounts of radium.

Outdoors, radon dissipates quickly in the atmosphere. Indoors, however, it can build up to dangerous levels, making the need for lung cancer prevention technology paramount.

Cracks and other openings in foundations and slabs can allow radon to seep into buildings from the surrounding soil, where it can accumulate and become part of the air circulated within buildings. Once there, it can only be detected by a high-performance radon sensor.

When inhaled, radon can become trapped in lung tissue and cause damage that can ultimately lead to lung cancer. Lung cancer is the second leading cause of cancer in the world, and radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer, making lung cancer prevention technology — such as a high-performance radon sensor — critical in preventing long-term exposure to this “silent killer.”

“Traditional detection methods involve collecting air samples and analyzing them for traces of radon,” Park explains. “The samples are captured in activated charcoal over a 2- to 7-day period and then sent to a lab for analysis. While the process can provide accurate results, those results only reveal the radon concentration for a very brief period. Because indoor radon levels can fluctuate considerably based on a variety of factors, samples gathered over a brief period are insufficient. Only continuous monitoring with a high-performance radon sensor can provide the level of protection needed to identify and avoid radon exposure.”

Weather conditions, variations in outdoor temperatures, and changes in barometric pressure can all trigger fluctuations in radon levels. Building operation and occupant behavior can also impact radon levels. Ecosense’s radon monitors provide continuous and dynamic information on radon levels to account for these factors and ensure occupant awareness regardless of conditions.

Ecosense’s digital radon monitors allow users to view real-time radon data on mobile devices via an in-app smart view so they can respond quickly when dangerous levels are detected. Trend charts reveal all the radon variations. The average concentration for the day, week, month, and year are displayed, along with long-term averages.

Providing award-winning accuracy and performance

Ecosense radon monitors provide award-winning sensitivity that ensures readings are accurate. A 2023 study conducted by the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program identified Ecosense monitors as the leading industry performers in both accuracy and precision. The heart of the monitor is a pulse-counting ionization chamber that provides initial readings in as little as 10 minutes. Within one hour, Ecosense monitors provide reliable measurements, and within 10 hours, the readings are 90 percent accurate.

“The patented ion chamber technology used in Ecosense radon monitors continues to set the highest benchmark for consumer and professional radon monitoring solutions,” explains Park. “It delivers 15 times better performance than industry standards. Those who trust in our monitors will know within hours rather than days when radon levels in their home rise dramatically.”

Ecosense’s patented ion chamber technology performance has received independent validation from the University of Michigan’s Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Science and the Kansas State University Radon Chamber. Both studies determined that Ecosense’s patented technology performed comparably to premium research-grade detectors. In 2021, Ecosense’s EcoQube was recognized as a CES Innovation Awards Honoree in the health and wellness category.

No lung cancer prevention technology or home monitoring system is complete without a component that detects the deadly threat posed by radon gas. Ecosense offers a range of intelligent, intuitive, and highly effective radon monitors that have been proven to provide unparalleled protection and peace of mind.

“Radon gas is a very real threat that puts your health and that of your loved ones at risk,” Park warns. “Ecosense’s radon monitors allow you to safeguard your home against that threat every day, providing the information you need to prevent radon-caused lung cancer.”
