There goes a saying that says, “Art is a form of protest.” In a world that is full of societal and political injustices, finding a way to let your voice be heard can make a difference. Travon Damar Parker, or Solomis, has found his voice through making Hip-Hop music.
Solomis is a Hip-Hop artist born in Dallas, Texas. In the mid-90s, their family moved to Oklahoma City, where he studied and spent his formative years. It was during this time when the Hip-Hop industry was growing more. The industry was being shaped by influential artists such as Bone N’ Thugs Harmony, Eminem, Kanye West, and Nas. It was their music that brought originality and honesty to the genre. As a young boy, Solomis’s ideas about style and the subject matter were shaped by the Hip Hop music of his youth.
Growing up, Solomis was exposed to a lot of political issues, social issues, and nerve-wracking events. It inspired him to find a way to let his thoughts and observations be known to many. Solomis began writing songs, with his childhood experiences and issues surrounding him, as his lyrical fodder.
In 2011, Solomis joined his older brother Nawlege 405 and formed a duo called “832,” which name takes after the number of the house they lived in and was burned to the ground. At the time, Solomis was attending school at the University of Dallas, where he also studied International Politics Economics in 2015. The duo was successful in recording and releasing their first EP entitled Synergy. It was only the start of their journey towards success.
It was in 2012 when the duo was able to release their first album, Love and Fear. Contrary to the more popular party rap genre, the album served as their way to express their inner struggles towards the injustices in the society around them. Their album won them the title in the 6th Annual Street Music Award for Best Duo, in 2013. As if they knew they could do more, the duo rallied other artists to contribute to their unique endeavor. And in 2014, they released the critically acclaimed album entitled Rapture.
However, Solomis wanted to prove that he could be more and that he can stand alone as an artist. Staying true to his words, in June 2016, he released his first solo album entitled Reality Check with the hit single Vibe Out. Moreover, he toured around the United States, where he has developed a solid fanbase. Two years later, his album OMW2U was released.
Solomis uses his music to forward relevant issues and relatable struggles people face in their everyday lives. He prides on making music that comes from the heart. As such, his music is the type that makes its listeners feel. For Solomis, being given a platform to speak out and relate to others is a privilege.
This coming June 20, 2020, Solomis is ready to tell stories about issues, which most people think are inescapable. Life during the pandemic, alcohol addiction, and relationship issues, are among the many things his album After Ours, We Pray, is all about. And the lead single of this new album is titled, “Chinatown”.
