There are two kinds of people in the world: the ones that go after their passion and the ones that follow a plan for stability in life.
While some people settle into a career and just accept the situation they find themselves in, others, like rapper $windlaaa, know that their future lies in their passion.
$windlaaa was originally born in Upstate New York under the name Curtis Foster Jr. He would spend most of his life in Miami, Florida, raised by a single mother. There he was surrounded by music.
He would walk around the house with Lil Wayne, R. Kelly, Kodak Black, and Michael Jackson blasting on the speakers. He would repeat R. Kelly’s Light It Up tour and sing each song as if he was on the stage performing.
He and his friends would do freestyle as they studied in school. $windlaaa would later turn his garage into a home-made studio where they produced their own tracks. When he grew older, he went off to college, played, and excelled in college football. The future looked bright in that aspect, but he knew that he wanted to pursue arts.
In his college, there was a talent show called Verbal. There, students would showcase their music and platform skills like singing, rapping, spoken word poetry, etc. $windlaaa started off as a beatmaker and wrote several poems about certain people around the class. His professors loved his works and encouraged him to keep writing. He had even written about his father but opted not to read it on stage.
The encouragement he received from his professors pushed him to express himself through music. Eventually, he decided to quit college football to pursue a career in the music industry. The decision received backlash from his family, especially his mother.
As a rapper, he mostly talked about life after high school and the trials he faced going to college. Many of his songs, if not most, are based on real-life stories. $windlaaa rapped about the struggles of living life on his own, the ups and downs of relationships, disappointments, betrayal, and how friends change once they saw the success he made.
Despite the lack of approval for the change in his career path, $windlaaa started two companies: a record label called Sheesh Entertainment, where he has produced his own songs, and a clothing line called Sheesh Clothing.
$windlaaa wants Sheesh Entertainment to bring in artists who share the struggles he faced to build a career in music and his goal of discussing profound, honest truths in life. He is hopeful that the music the company produces will reach out to the next generation in the same way that the last one reached out to him and his peers.
While his family did not share his enthusiasm for his career change, $windlaaa kept his mother’s advice to keep going and not let anyone stop him. She told him that he was capable of doing anything he put his mind to.
With Sheesh Entertainment, he wants to convey that people should not be afraid to pursue their passion the same way he did.
