Over the past five years, several countries have attempted to increase their strategies on national suicide prevention after the World Health Organization published its first global report on the state of suicide among individuals last year. “Despite [the] progress [in preventing suicide], one person still dies every 40 seconds from [it],” stated Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the current Director-General of WHO.
Although the statistics on suicide is quite alarming, several states have not yet seen the realities of it. The total number of countries implementing suicide prevention strategies is only at 38. Compared to the aggregate sum of all the states around the world, 38 is still far too few of a number. There is a need for governments to establish such a system, especially with the stay-at-home measures brought about by the pandemic; people are slowly suffering from isolation.
Despite these unfortunate turn of events and the somewhat impractical response of institutions, some individuals began making lemonades out of lemons to fight off one of society’s most pressing issues.
One of those most enthused to bring about positive change into the world is a life coach and entrepreneur named Darryll Stinson. This positivist is making it his life’s mission to help people overcome depression and other mental illnesses that lead to suicidal ideation.
Darryll’s determination did not only stem from his understanding of the people’s needs but also his personal experiences battling depression and suicidal attempts at a young age. In his previous years, Darryll spent his life finding reasons to live. Apart from depression and suicide, he also suffered from addiction, countless rejections from his parents, and other troubling mental illnesses. Darryll’s younger years were admittedly dismal, but as he was approaching maturation, he found ways to manage himself and adapt to his circumstances.
To Darryll, the way he managed to survive it all was no easy task. There were a couple of detours throughout his journey, but for once in his life, he knew he was determined to live rather than to die. Because of his newfound successes in handling himself, he thought it best to share his courses of action to help those struggling individuals who need it the most.
Driven by his altruistic values, Darryll began materializing his vision of helping others as early as the year 2017. He created Second Chance Athletes, a holistic athletic transition company designed to help athletes who are passionate about building their legacy by increasing their visibility, impact, and revenue. To put it simply, the company aids athletes to transform their passion for sports to a concrete career memorable enough to leave footprints around the world.
Apart from his trailblazing company dedicated to helping aspiring athletes, Darryll continues to radiate positivity in his other roles and many platforms. Darryll is also a dynamic TEDx Speaker, Pastor, and a certified John Maxwell Coach.
As a talented individual, Darryll keeps himself busy with other things. When he is not working, Darryll is occupied with rapping, making music, and reading entertainment or sports while spending quality time with his wife and three daughters.
Darryll hopes that with his vision of bringing positive change through his different platforms, he could help bolster the world’s initiative in preventing suicide and alleviating society’s continuously increasing problems about mental illnesses. These, coupled with his upcoming book entitled, “Who Am I After Sports?” that is set to be released this October 20.
