Each generation is inspired by the vision of filmmakers who execute their stories in ways that speak out to people. Bobby McGruther is among the many who have taken a career in the visionary storytellers’ footsteps before him.
Robert “Bobby” McGruther was born in Providencia, Chile, and raised in Monmouth County, New Jersey. He was raised by adoptive parents who emphasized the importance of reading. Bobby’s father would read to him every night before bed, sparking his love for stories. His favorite medium for storytelling had always been comic books.
As a kid, he would loiter around in a comic book store owned by comedian and comic book writer Kevin Smith. Throughout his growing years, Kevin Smith encouraged him, which later on inspired him to go into filmmaking.
He started as a vocalist for a metal band with his friends in his 20’s, putting out a few albums with various bands. Eventually, Bobby got a degree in literature and screenwriting. He would begin his career by directing music videos and producing short films.
Bobby McGruther eventually began to find his rhythm in filmmaking and took on a comedic writing style with darker elements. He wrote his first feature in 2017 and since then has been working on film sets, both his own and others. Bobby found more and more ideas for projects but found it difficult looking for someone to invest in his art, so he decided to invest in himself.
From his apartment in Brooklyn, Bobby created a small production company called Red Skies Studios. Unlike other small companies, his goal isn’t to make money but to entertain people. Bobby works with a small team of five, including himself. Together they write and produce low-budget indie films in a variety of genres.
Red Skies Studios has produced small films that have won awards at film festivals despite working on a small budget. Bobby is still able to make high-quality content with his highly talented team’s participation, gaining a reputation in the community. He often connects and collaborates with other small filmmakers upstate in Hudson Valley, New York, and New Jersey.
So far, Bobby McGruther has been credited with three features: One More Thing, Fair Haven, and Tequila Flavored Cigarettes. Apart from working as a writer and producer, Bobby has also starred in his films as the leading actor. Each of his films carries an underlying theme of family relationships and choosing to love someone when it may not be the easiest thing to do. He is set to continue his themes into future projects.
With their success, Bobby McGruther has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. He wants to continue writing and directing more films and hopes to provide full-time jobs for his staff rather than freelancing them.
