Matt Corman says he is going to release a song every Friday from August 28th, 2020, till the end of the year. That has to be the sheer passion and hunger to deliver, and for an independent artist, it’s quite impressive. So who really is Matt Corman? His career officially kicked off in 2014 with the release of a mixtape, Bars Over Bass, which he released from his college dorm room.
By 2015, he released his second mixtape titled “Speak First,” and not long after, he performed alongside established acts like Fetty Wap, Post Malone, Cam Meekins, and Sammy Adams. He even opened up for Sammy Adams at a sold-out show that was held at the House of Blues in Boston, MA. In 2016, he started working with Nicco Catalano, AKA Neek, in Los Angeles, and together they created Matt Corman’s sound that has gained him a cult following made up of an audience of 13 to 30-year-olds. In February 2018, he performed at the legendary Middle East in Boston, MA, as part of the headline acts. And later in the same year, on November 23rd, he released Whiteboards & Windows.
After his 2018 project release, Matt Corman decided to create a structure for himself as an independent artist. He established a record label, which he named MIH Universal, an acronym for “Make It Happen.” He also has the acronym emblazoned as a tattoo on his arm. According to Matt, his entire life and career story has been all about “making it happen,” albeit all by himself as an independent artist. His catalog alone has amassed more than 20 million streams without the backing of any big record label, and the number continues to increase. This has given him that much-needed confidence to release a song every Friday till the end of the year, and he started doing that on August 28th, 2020.
According to Matt Corman, “I am releasing a song every Friday for the rest of 2020 and seemingly all of 2021. I have made the decision to stay an independent artist this year, despite having conversations with many of the major powerhouse labels in November of 2019.” He has realized that being Independent makes him the machine that drives his business forward. “I have complete ownership of my masters, distribution, publishing, and brand direction. I have built this business from the ground up with zero help. I have toured the United States alongside big-time artists as well as sold out three of my own headline shows in Boston, MA,” he adds.
Popular YouTubers NELK and FaZe Rug have used his songs in their videos, and he has been on tour with Post Malone after the release of White Iverson. His brand “Make It Happen” is the most important thing to him as he had to forgo other things to focus solely on the brand. He does not only sing, he writes, produces, records, and engineers his own music.
For his brand, he hopes to grow the brand into something bigger in the next five years. He has always made things work somehow over the years, and he believes that by staying true to his authentic sound, he’ll become a big name in the hip-hop industry. He does not want to be just another musician to his fans; he wants a deep-level personal connection with them. And hopefully, in five years’ time, he can get a song that will peak number 1 on the Billboards charts. He also plans to create a platform for other independent artists who do not have the resources to support their talents. And when all is said and done, he will be doing significant philanthropic works all around the world.
