Todd Phillips is finally receiving his comeuppance, as the long-awaited Joker sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, has been granted the go-light.
The Hangover filmmaker will return to direct a sequel to the psychological thriller, following in the bloody footsteps of the 2019 original. Arthur Fleck, the titular Clown Prince of Crime, is also played by Joaquin Phoenix.
The Joker left us with more questions than answers, but because the first film was marketed as a standalone with no ties to the DC universe, many fans assumed the tale ended there.
It’s not your average Batman film, and since Joker won Phoenix an Academy Award for Best Actor, Joker: Folie à Deux has great expectations.
Here’s all we know about the Joker 2 release date, cast, plot, and more if you’re ready to put on a good face.
The cast of The Joker 2
Phoenix will reprise his role as Arthur Fleck, which should come as no surprise to anyone. The Joker starred Frances Conroy, Robert De Niro, and Zazie Beetz and had an all-star ensemble. Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of possibilities for returning cast members.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lady Gaga is said to be joining the cast. Even better, the “A Star Is Born” star might be playing Harley Quinn in the upcoming film. According to the website, Joker 2 would be a musical, which would be a huge departure from the previous films, but also something very Joker-esque.
There’s a chance Beetz will reprise her role as Sophie, as the film’s cinematographer stated that Fleck did not kill her despite her unclear destiny. Although the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne rule out Brett Cullen as Thomas Wayne, keep in mind that he is Arthur’s father.
Because of Joker’s unreliable narrator, there’s a chance De Niro’s Murray Franklin wasn’t shot on live television, but we’d be astonished if he’s still alive.
If Folie à Deux wants to investigate the beginnings of Batman and Mr. J’s destructive relationship, Douglas Hodge’s Alfred Pennyworth might return, and Dante Pereira-young Olsen’s Bruce Wayne makes sense.
Finally, with Willem Dafoe talking so much about Joker — and even speculating on a sequel — who wouldn’t want to see the Green Goblin actor join the madness?
Possible Release Date
The Hollywood Reporter reported in May 2021 that Phillips has signed up to write a sequel to The Joker. Your guess is as good as ours as to when Joker 2 will be released. Warner Bros. has a long list of DC films on the way, ranging from Black Adam to The Flash, which will keep us busy well until 2023.
On Instagram, Phillips shared a photo of Phoenix reading the screenplay, indicating that the plot is at least complete.
Nonetheless, the fact that Joker: Folie à Deux has yet to go into production means we may have to wait a while. However, due to the lack of additional CGI, Joker was shot in just 12 weeks and had a quick post-production.
The release date for Joker 2 is expected to be announced soon.
