The average young black girl takes pride in her hair and how it adds to her beauty; thus, anything that tampers with that is seen as a threat that must be nipped in the bud. This is the story of Shemika Jackson and the birth of her company, Kafuné Amor Hair Care.
Shemika Jackson grew up loving and nurturing her hair and was committed to ensuring everyone she crossed paths with had a healthy hair journey. “A Black girl and her hair is a story of loss and growth, long and short, curly and straight, but mostly, it is a story of beauty, acceptance, security, confidence,” Shemika said.
For Shemika, falling in love with hair care and styling started at a young age, primarily due to her mother’s influence, as she was in cosmetology. Her first exposure to hair care and beauty came from working on the mannequins that her mother brought home. She would cut and dye their hair. After which, she would style them the way she wanted. Years passed, and her interest in hair care never waned. Her passion from when she was nine never changed, even after going to college to get a Bachelor’s degree in Business and starting a career.
Not long after, in 2003, she saw that a thin spot that she first noticed in 1998 had grown bigger. For the next year, she visited many specialists, used different medicated shampoos, and went through scalp biopsies. Then, in 2004, she was diagnosed with Cicatricial Alopecia, which signaled the beginning of a tumultuous journey. She followed all the medical advice and started receiving steroid shots in her scalp, but nothing worked.
Her condition inspired her to learn more about Cicatricial Alopecia to be prepared for any other issues it might lead to in the future. As a result, she started to develop hair design options to mask her hair condition, and that single move landed her on the path that has led to Kafune Hair. Her first hair business, Upscale Lace Wigz, started in 2007, and over a decade later, in 2019, Kafuné Amor Hair Care came to life and has provided hair loss solution products and lace wig accessories to clients since then.
With hundreds of clients served, Shemika Jackson’s vigor has been renewed year in year out, and she has become a certified expert at producing quality products and rendering professional hair care services. “I wanted Black women to know that you don’t have to look anywhere or to anyone to feel good or feel beautiful. All you have to do is look within and let what’s within flow out. It’s about so much more, and our hair is just one part of it, but if I can help a woman with that one small part, maybe that can be the start of a new story,” she shared.
Kafuné Amor Hair Care targets black women between 25 and 65 living the life of their dreams. The brand’s full product line includes lace wigs, lace wig holding products, and hair loss solution products. Shemika’s goals for the brand are to get the products into multiple stores and salons and expand the product line to include lace wig hair care and individual hair care products.
