Katherine Pendergast, also known as Kat Socks, is an award-winning author and entrepreneur. She is best known for her line of children’s books. Kat’s books have won six national awards from different award-giving bodies in the United States and travels to various author events, including school visits, all around the country.
Kat’s most popular work is the series called Pickles the Dog. The collection of stories revolved and is inspired by a real dog named Pickles, who resided at an animal shelter in Minot, North Dakota. Pickles eventually made her way into Kat’s life after one of her family members adopted Pickles. The sweet dog has been a bundle of joy ever since.
Aside from the series, Kat has also written Babies of the Badlands. She’s also co-authored In Loving Memory: A Child’s Journey to Understanding a Funeral and Starting the Grieving Process and In Loving Memory: A Child’s Journey to Understanding a Cremation Funeral and Starting the Grieving Process. Her books are available in around 50 stores nationwide. Kat even became the #1 new release on Amazon several times and the #1 best seller for local bookstores.
The author is also a successful entrepreneur. Kat is the creator of a line of soft sole baby shoes called Kat’s Socks. Her boutique delegates a portion of their sales to donate to local animal shelters. Helping animals find homes is something dearly close to Kat’s heart. Having an avenue that allows her to give back brings her satisfaction and purpose.
Kat is continually thinking about innovative ways to encourage young children to see reading as a fun activity. The author does not confine herself in a specific box but prefers to do things her way. To enhance her books, Kat makes available custom-made stuffed animals that can be purchased as part of the book. To Kat, it is her way to excite young readers. Kat further emphasized the importance of developing a reading habit in kids and that authors should find creative ways to do so.
Kat spends the majority of her time visiting schools, doing book-signing events, and other special functions. She said that meeting children in real life is a chance to inspire them to become whatever they want. After all, it’s not every day that kids get to meet an accomplished author in their school. Kat wants to set the tone and be an example that anything is possible.
Reading and writing have been Kat’s passion ever since. Despite pursuing these later in life, reading became her comfort, and writing was her avenue to be herself. They were two of her favorite things to do. Today, she wants other children to feel and be enthusiastic about their passion the same way she has.
Kat currently lives with her family and two Great Danes in Bismarck, North Dakota. Her Great Dane, Carmela, is a certified pet therapy dog. Together, Kat and Carmela volunteer at a local facility for children.
