Meagan Jain is a painter and designer of Indian heritage based in Brooklyn, New York. She has a Masters in Gerontology. While pursuing her degrees, she found a way to intertwine her artistic inclinations with her chosen major and began to visit assisted living communities and nursing homes with art supplies in tow. As an artist, Jain works across a number of artistic mediums, whether it be hand-crafted mirrors or oil on canvas, and explores themes of women’s rights, the aging process and how women’s role in society evolves throughout their lives. Each piece she creates is deeply symbolic, moving beyond linguistic barriers in order to foster respect for every person’s experience.Â
Jain’s works are featured in several public community projects and various art collectors’ homes around the world. She will be showcasing her work at The Other Art Fair (April 4th – 7th) at booth #90 and currently is a part of a group show, titled Women in Art, at the esteemed New York City gallery, Carlton Fine Arts.Â
Her hand-crafted mirrors are featured in galleries in New York, and she frequently exhibits at national art fairs. Jain has gained universal attention for the creativity and uniqueness of her mirrors and their ability to capture the essence of the human form. Jain sees her mirrors as creative platforms to engage viewers in discussions surrounding women’s rights and the human body.Â
Among her notable examples is the Grand Silhouette Mirror, which draws inspiration from the graceful contours of the human body to celebrate individual beauty on a grand scale. Its expansive presence makes it a perfect centerpiece for spacious living areas or grand hallways, effortlessly amplifying both space and grace. The Mother Goddess Luminary Mirror also offers an interesting take on the female experience. Fusing ancient spirituality and modern aesthetics and enhanced with soft LED backlighting, this mirror is meant to be reminiscent of the revered Mother Goddess, who was worshiped during the Neolithic and Paleolithic eras. Other mirrors in her portfolio include The Hilma Flower Mirror, which channels Hilma af Klint’s transcendent approach to creating art, and The Everywoman Mirror, a symbol of empowerment and inclusivity honoring women from all walks of life. In addition to serving as functional décor, these mirrors symbolize the meaning of being a woman in the past, present and future.
In addition to her mirror collection, she also creates ‘Portals,’ which are visual representations of personal transformation and interconnectedness. These sinuous and curvaceous symbols are designed to evoke a sense of otherworldliness, inviting viewers to explore deeper aspects of themselves through her art.
Although she is now focused on her own studio practice, she spent the majority of her decade-long career hosting female-focused workshops and classes. One of her past workshops includes the Vulva Self Portrait class, which stemmed from Jain’s intrinsic desire to dismantle and rebuild societal norms surrounding the female body. Jain is also the Founder of a not-for-profit, Ageless Interaction, where Jain’s passion for art evolved into working with women of all ages and communities.Â
