Rising professional basketball player Montae Harris is not only promising on the court but is also a very gifted communicator, a skill he only discovered recently when he launched his podcast. Harris got into an injury while playing in Spain for a club known as Basquet Benicarlo. What was supposed to be downtime for the talented basketball player turned out to be a season of new opportunities.
After his injury, Harris reflected on what other things he is good at besides basketball. His mother and a friend suggested the idea of starting a podcast, and he liked it. He named his program What Does It Take? Harris asks his interviewees what it takes to become successful in life and how to create a platform to grow one’s personal brand at the same time.
Harris’ podcast features various personalities in sports, politics, activism, and even the music industry. He has been privileged to have exceptional guests on his podcast that includes Javier Ramos, who is presently running for the congressional district of the east valley of Arizona. He also did a series on four-time national champion Cory Jamieson who also once played in Grace Christian University as Harris did. Interestingly, Harris also interviewed basketball coach Scotty Mason on his podcast.
“I just feel that it’s important to give back, and not everyone has that guidance. I grew up looking for answers to be successful and am still growing and learning, but I feel this is a great way to help so they don’t make the same mistake as I did. We all love to hear stories, so let’s make it meaningful,” Harris explains.
For Harris, his podcast is more of having a raw conversation with his guests rather than simply interviewing them. He allows his guests to talk about their family experiences, their personal principles when it comes to politics, and their attributes that helped them get to where they are now in life. Through their testimonies and examples, Harris hopes to reach young audiences—from athletes, to college students, and even those still in high school.
It would surprise a lot of people to know that only 22% of the adult population in the United States was familiar with podcasting way back in 2006. In 2020, that same percentage rose to a staggering 75% according to reports. Over the years, a lot of people in the country have discovered podcasting as an exciting pastime. Just last year, there were at least 88 million podcast listeners in the United States alone. Fearless forecasts suggest that podcast listeners will go beyond 160 million by the time 2023 comes. This simply goes to show that more and more people are getting what they need by listening to podcasts.
Years from now, Harris is looking forward to going mainstream. He aspires to one day have his own show and collaborate with companies on various projects. He may seem to be a long way from becoming a popular podcast personality, but for Harris, it is all about telling the story and inspiring others first.
