When Chaitra Vedullapalli co-founded OPULIS, there was no blueprint, no corporate funding, and no roadmap. What there was, however, was a belief that Microsoft’s 50-year legacy and the extraordinary women who helped shape its trillion-dollar transformation deserved to be honored, documented, and shared. What began as an idea quickly became a global movement, a living archive of women’s leadership, courage, and innovation in technology.

For Vedullapalli, the journey of building OPULIS wasn’t just about storytelling. It was about redefining what leadership looks like and who gets to lead.

“We tin-cupped our way through the early stages,” she recalls. “We reached out to our networks, asked for support, and unlocked whatever resources, infrastructure, and talent we collectively had. What amazed me was how much we could accomplish when we stopped waiting for permission and simply started building.”

Through this process, she discovered a new truth about leadership: it doesn’t require perfection—it requires participation.

The Redefinition of Leadership

The experience fundamentally reshaped how Vedullapalli sees herself not just as a leader, but as a woman in tech.

“There were moments when not everyone was aligned,” she admits. “But I learned that if the vision is clear and the goals are transparent, people will find their way into the journey. Leadership isn’t about forcing participation, it’s about creating reasons for people to want to contribute.”

From this realization emerged a more grounded, systems-minded perspective. Vedullapalli began to view leadership not as command and control, but as connection and creation. Courage, she says, isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about asking the hard questions and holding the vision even when others can’t yet see it.

“As a woman in tech, this journey reminded me that access is our greatest equalizer,” she says. “When we combine courage, clarity, and community, we can build legacies that will outlast us all.”

A Declaration of Belonging and Impact

The message at the heart of OPULIS “You belong. You have an impact.” feels particularly urgent in today’s rapidly shifting technological landscape.

“We’re living through one of the most profound transformations in human history,” Vedullapalli explains. “Artificial intelligence is reshaping how we work, connect, and create value faster than ever before. Institutions are being tested, and the very definition of leadership is being rewritten.”

In this moment of flux, it’s easy especially for women, emerging leaders, and those outside traditional circles of influence to feel invisible or uncertain of their place. That’s precisely why Vedullapalli wanted OPULIS to deliver more than inspiration.

“When we say, ‘You belong. You have an impact,’ we’re not just offering encouragement,” she emphasizes. “We’re making a declaration. Every individual has a role in shaping the systems of tomorrow.”

The OPULIS Manifesto captures that vision:

“Intelligence was being democratized. Technology has become a powerful tool for access. For the first time, individuals everywhere could learn, build, lead, and unlock their potential at scale.”

The women featured in OPULIS embody this principle. They didn’t wait to be chosen, they chose themselves. They didn’t wait for permission; they built pathways for others to walk through. Their courage and creativity stand as living proof that anyone, at any level, can make an impact.

“This message is both a reminder and a call to action,” Vedullapalli says. “Belonging is the foundation of innovation, and impact is the measure of purpose.”

A Movement with Purpose: The Book-to-Scholarship Model

OPULIS is more than a book, it’s a movement. For every ten copies sold, the project funds a Microsoft AI Innovator Certification Scholarship for women. This initiative gives women the technical training, mentorship, and community they need to thrive in the age of AI.

“My vision is for every woman who touches, plays, or creates with AI to have a copy of OPULIS in her hands,” Vedullapalli says. “I want her to read these stories, connect with them, and design her own blueprint for leadership.”

Through the Book-to-Scholarship model, Vedullapalli hopes to ignite 1,000 AI careers for women around the world. But the goal extends far beyond workforce development—it’s about rebalancing the architecture of innovation itself.

“When women gain access to AI skills, we don’t just build smarter workplaces; we build a more inclusive economy,” she explains. “AI isn’t about automation, it’s about amplification. It mirrors what great teams already do: detect patterns, forecast possibilities, and innovate for impact.”

Every scholarship, she says, is a bridge. Every book, a spark. Together, they form the foundation of a future where women don’t just participate in the AI revolution they lead it.

A Legacy of Connection and Courage

Since launching #empowHER50, the community around OPULIS has grown rapidly. Vedullapalli has received messages from readers, leaders, and alumni across industries who describe the book as transformational.

“Many readers told us OPULIS made them feel seen and reconnected to their purpose,” she says. “They realized that impact doesn’t always wear a title and that belonging is built through contribution.”

Dawn Trudeau, co-owner of the Seattle Storm, captured the spirit of the project best:

OPULIS isn’t just a coffee table book, it’s a call to action. A testament to what’s possible when we multiply access and lead with purpose.”

Rich Kaplan from the Microsoft Alumni Network echoed this:

OPULIS is a celebration of leadership, a recognition of the women who shaped Microsoft’s culture and innovation, and a reminder of the pathways they’ve opened for future generations.”

For Vedullapalli, these responses validate what she always believed: that storytelling is a force for systems change.

Writing the Next Chapter

When asked what she hopes a young woman in tech will feel reading OPULIS twenty years from now, Vedullapalli doesn’t hesitate.

“I hope she feels inspired, seen, and empowered and that she takes action,” she says. “That she mentors others, drives inclusion, builds responsibly, and opens doors for the next generation.”

Her ultimate hope is that OPULIS becomes a mirror, a guidebook for what she calls ICONIC Leadership™: leading with Intention, Courage, Optimism, Nurture, Innovation, and Connection.

“Real leadership isn’t about being the first or the loudest,” Vedullapalli says. “It’s about building pathways so others can rise faster. If future generations can do that lead with awareness, courage, and community then OPULIS will have done its job.”
