As the days get shorter and the temperatures begin to cool down, spending time indoors becomes a habit for people. The real question is, what do you do to pass the time? There are hundreds of different hobbies you can take up from crafting, cooking, to exercising, but it’s also the premier time to wind down. That’s why reading is the perfect hobby because you can still dive into something fun, but it doesn’t have to be so demanding. The world today is always so chaotic and busy, that finding time to read isn’t always so easy. The fall season is a great excuse to put your other responsibilities aside for a little while, and take time for yourself.

Reading is the perfect fall activity to dive into because it matches the vibes of the season. You can read in the comfort of your home, car, library or even treat yourself to your local coffee shop to really set the tune of the season. Reading is an inexpensive way to learn new things because there are so many genres to choose from. The opportunities are endless when it comes to reading, and can help set you up for the aesthetic fall season.

“Shorter days and cooler nights remind us that another summer has passed. The golden leaves of autumn stir feelings of nostalgia, comfort, and anxiety as we feel winter approaching. During this season, many readers long for a certain kind of book—one that will take them on an emotional journey with characters they care about, people who are living through their dark nights while pulling their coat collars tighter against the howling rain and wind,” says author Jim Hight

Reading not only helps you pass the time during the fall and winter months, but studies show that it has positive effects on your physical and mental health. When the seasons begin to change and it gets darker out for longer, some people can fall into season depression. Studies show that about 5% of American adults suffer from seasonal affective disorder. Because the sun is not out as much, and people are indoors more, it can give more people time to think and travel down a rabbit hole of depression and anxiety. Finding a distraction could be a great way for people to take their minds off their worries, and reading does just that.

Not only is reading a great way to take your mind off things, but it’s proven to help relieve stress and contributes to many other positive physical symptoms. Studies show that reading alleviates peoples’ stress levels by 68% because it helps people stay grounded and channel their energy into something else. It doesn’t necessarily matter what you read, but giving your brain time to think of something different does a world of good.

Reading is also a great way for people to improve their focus, creativity and contributes to an increased memory. The act of continually reading new words helps you retain both short-term and long-term information better. People don’t always read a book in one sitting, so they have to remember the story line for longer periods of time. Training your brian to work in this way will translate to other aspects of your life.

Whether you enjoy the fall season or not, there are ways to make it more enjoyable. There are so many different hobbies you can take up to pass the time, but reading helps keep you entertained and helps your body physically and mentally. The vibes of fall are often very cozy and calm, and reading gives people the opportunity to take time for themselves. Cuddling up indoors with a book and a cup of coffee or tea can help set the mood for the season, and gives your brain the chance to relax from your busy life. What books are on your fall reading list this year?
