Sigourney Sterling, who goes by the stage name Sig Official, is a Haitian-born and LA-based independent artist who grew up on the East coast. Born in Port au Prince, Sig owes her growth to Afrobeat culture, Haitian Kompa, and Zouk. Sig started as a producer for local artists while attending the Arts Institute until she found her calling on the mic. Sig subsequently made her way to the West Coast and began recording African-like sounds. Sig Official’s music is deeply rooted in Afrobeats and Kompa mix, and she has successfully combined distinct genres of music while sampling diverse sounds in hip-hop culture. Her recent self-produced single, “Kreyol,” has achieved tremendous reaction among the local community and her community back home in Haiti.
Her team has also made it possible to stream her music on every platform, making it accessible for people worldwide. Not only does Sig Official enjoy making timeless and euphoric melodies for everyone regardless of culture, but she has also created a niche and space for her culture. Sig has worked very hard to build a foundation, and she hopes to reach a worldwide audience and occurrence. Her latest track, “Pause,” has surpassed expectations and is expected to break more records in 2021.
Sig Official describes her music style as one that gives people a sense of identity. Mostly, coming from a third world country like Haiti, where people are going through hardships, with many of them going unreported, she felt the need to create relatable music.
Even though Sig’s target audience is the entire world, she still wants her home country, Haiti, to be the focal point. She wants to introduce the rest of the world to the nation’s sounds and the people’s vibrations. She also hopes to motivate up and coming artists from the area to embrace the culture and take it far and wide.
Sig Official believes she is different from her competition because while everyone is doing hip-hop and rap, she chooses a music genre that touches base with other cultures. Her ability to speak another language has helped her reach as many diverse listeners as possible. Through her music, she also targets people who get overlooked and unable to be themselves, like the LGBTQ+ community. Sig considers her identity as a lesbian vital because she is from a third world country where that is frowned upon. Still, through her relatable music, the people are beginning to relate to not just the music but the person behind the music. Sig is different from other musical artists because her music breaks every social norm.
On her motivation, Sig Official says her transition from the East Coast to the West Coast made her feel like she left some people behind, and she decided to connect with them through her music, merchandise, and social media platforms. She believes the acceptance of her music style confirms that there is indeed a market for her type of music. She hopes her brand and what she stands for continue to resonate in not just people’s homes but also their hearts.
On where she sees herself and her brand in five years, Sig Official said, “Five years from now, I see my brand and music flowing through different countries. I want to be able to bring a diversified music taste into our social circle. I hope to reference the new sound I’ve innovated while inspiring others to try new things and face their fears. Overall, where I see myself in five years is a stage in my life where I know I have accomplished delivering a new and diverse breakthrough to the music industry.”
People worldwide can now stream Sig Official’s music through Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and several other media in the coming months. For more information about Sig and her music, album release dates, tour schedules, visit her Website.
