How Simon Papazian’s entrepreneurial journey led to the rebirth of a family legacy in the medical waste industry.
Simon Papazian’s path in the waste management industry is deeply rooted in his family’s history, and he has excelled in his own pursuits to leave a legacy of integrity and ingenuity. Starting from humble beginnings in his parents’ medical laboratory, Simon has carved out a niche in the world of medical waste management. His journey is a testament to the power of family, perseverance, and a commitment to doing things the right way.
Simon’s introduction to business came early. Growing up, he and his brother worked in their parents’ medical laboratory, handling administrative tasks from a young age. His parents believed in the value of hard work and kept their sons busy with tasks that would not only keep them out of trouble but also teach them the fundamentals of running a business.
“My parents always wanted us to work with them, so we were constantly working; we didn’t have time to do anything else,” Simon reflects on his early experiences.
Their roles in the lab gave Simon and his brother a unique insight into the healthcare industry, particularly the logistics and costs associated with medical waste disposal—a realization that would later become the foundation for their future business.
The turning point for the Papazian family came when Simon’s father, always looking for ways to cut costs, noticed the substantial fees they were paying for medical waste disposal. He proposed that they handle the waste management themselves, a suggestion that initially seemed outlandish to the rest of the family.
“We thought he was crazy,” Simon admits, recalling the moment his father suggested entering the waste management industry.
Despite their skepticism, the family leveraged their existing connections with doctors and healthcare providers, convincing them to trust the Papazians not only with their laboratory work but also with their medical waste. The gamble paid off, and soon the waste management side of the business was generating more revenue than the lab itself.
Stericycle, the largest medical waste management company at the time, took an interest in the family business. In a pivotal meeting, Stericycle made an offer to buy the Papazians’ business, an offer that Simon’s father accepted. The deal was significant, providing the family with a substantial payout, but it also required them to sign a five-year non-compete agreement, temporarily ending their involvement in the industry.
“We were just a little guy, and suddenly the biggest company in the industry was interested in us,” Simon recalls.
Once the non-compete period expired, Simon was ready to jump back into the industry he had grown to love. He re-entered the medical waste management field with a renewed focus on ethical practices and sustainability. Simon’s new venture, Logix Environmental, was built on the previous experiences and insights gained in the industry, but Simon’s deeper commitment to doing things the right way is what sets Logix Environmental apart.
“I want people to understand what’s going on,” Simon says. “It’s not just about getting rid of waste; it’s about doing it the right way.”
The improper disposal of biomedical waste poses significant risks not only to human health but also to household pets, regional wildlife, and the environment. Biomedical waste can contribute to pollution through water contamination, affecting aquatic life and agriculture and causing waterborne illnesses like salmonella. Improper disposal of waste can release harmful emissions, contributing to respiratory issues like asthma, lung cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The spread of viral illnesses such as HIV and hepatitis B, along with parasitic infections, is another major concern. These dangers underscore the critical need for better waste management practices.Â
Companies like Logix Environmental that prioritize safe disposal methods are not just protecting the public but also safeguarding the planet.
“I want to grow my business, but I also want to do it in a way that is ethical and responsible,” Simon emphasizes, reflecting his commitment to sustainability.
Simon Papazian’s approach to waste management is not just about profitability; it’s about making a positive impact on the environment and ensuring that his business practices contribute to a better future. Under Simon’s leadership, Logix Environmental is not just another waste management company; it is a leader in adopting new technologies and practices that prioritize environmental stewardship. Simon is deeply committed to finding innovative solutions to the challenges faced by the industry, from reducing the carbon footprint of waste transportation to ensuring proper disposal methods that do not harm the environment.
As Logix Environmental continues to grow, Simon remains committed to the principles that have guided him from the beginning: hard work, innovation, and a dedication to doing the right thing. His story is not just about a family legacy but about setting new standards in an industry that is critical to the future of our planet.
