Being passionate about more than one thing does not always have to end in a situation where one gets compromised because of the other.
It may take a whole lot of hard work and commitment, but when people truly align themselves with their goals, anything is possible. And Lisa Collum, an educational powerhouse, shows how to get this done.
More than being an esteemed CEO, a published author, and a highly respected educator, Lisa Collum is also a devoted mother well-loved by her four wonderful children. And as an advocate of high-quality education, it has always been her dream to ensure that students are getting the most out of their learning experience while enjoying every step of the journey, as well. She now owns and operates two established educational companies: Top Score Writing Inc. and Coastal Middle and High School.
Lisa’s passion for teaching manifested itself about fourteen years ago when she graduated from college. Having finished her education, it dawned on her that she wanted to be an instrument in helping others finish theirs. This realization did not come as much of a surprise since it was her childhood dream to become a teacher. She recalls playing with her stuffed animals and pretending that they were her students.
Years later, these ‘pretend classes’ turned into a reality when she secured her first job as a fourth grade writing teacher in one of the lowest-performing schools in Palm Beach County. And although she was more than ecstatic to have landed the job, she felt as if there was still something more she could be doing for her students.
Always having her students’ best interests at heart, Lisa was worried that there was no specific writing curriculum available for her to use in her classes. As a result, she took it upon herself to scour the world wide web for resources and to even visit local educational stores. But to her dismay, she always ended up with nothing. This setback, however, only pushed her to try harder so that her students would pass the state writing test.
Lisa had a long road ahead of her, so she started with a small one-inch binder filled with over 25 lessons. With her family’s help, she worked day and night to make copies of the lessons and have them shipped out by UPS. This family-led assembly line production continued for about a year until it caught the attention of a superintendent from another country.
Impressed with Lisa’s works, the superintendent bought the curriculum for her entire district and even had the former train over three hundred teachers therein. And as word about this pivotal moment spread, more and more districts got interested and started purchasing the curriculum for their schools. This marked the beginning of Top Score Writing.
Top Score Writing, Inc. is a company that specializes in writing curriculum and is the only program specifically designed to prepare students for the state writing assessment. And now that the Top Score Writing curriculum is being used in thousands of schools in five different states, Lisa’s next goal is to take the program to a national level.
