Sonoma County, in Northern California, has a beautiful landscape with sprawling hills, vineyards, relaxing spas and acclaimed food. Located just 30 miles north of San Francisco, there are more than 425 wineries, amazing hiking trails through the redwoods, and beautiful homes along the Pacific Coast. Unfortunately, the cost of living isn’t cheap.
According to the Council for Community and Economic Research, the cost of living in Sonoma County is 52 percent higher than the national average. However, it is typically more likely that a buyer is moving to Sonoma County from elsewhere in California, and compared to the rest of California, the cost of living in Sonoma County is fractionally lower than the California average.
Fractionally is the keyword since things are still expensive in Sonoma County. Forbes magazine rates California as having the nation’s third-highest living costs behind Hawaii and Massachusetts. So it’s no wonder Sonoma Country has some of the most expensive homes in the country.
Tomo, a real estate and mortgage company, looked at the most recent homes on the market and came up with a quick list of the five most expensive homes in Sonoma County. And, no, that is not a typo for the first home on the list—the sale price is $32.5 million, but what a buyer gets is beyond their wildest dreams. This home on Sonoma Mountain Road is in the heart of the Sonoma Mountains in Glen Ellen, and borders the picturesque Jack London State Park; this magnificent 156-acre estate offers a sanctuary of tranquility and refined living. This private and gated estate includes a main residence, a guest house, an agricultural barn, a premium vineyard, redwood forest and enchanting gardens along with dramatic and sweeping valley views. Designed through the collaboration of Aidlin Darling Design and Cello Maudru Construction, the main residence is an architectural masterpiece featuring expansive verandas, sunlit courtyards, and interiors that blend traditional elegance with modern comforts. The 3,000 sf guest residence is equally significant in design, form and function. Each structure on the estate is unique, yet all blend beautifully with the land and property that surround them, designed by Marta Fry Landscape Architects, creating a harmonious integration with the natural landscape.
