Most individuals catch the acting bug early in life, but for Bobby Rand, it came at a later stage. His journey into acting began in 2007 while he was serving time in prison. While watching movies in the day room, he envisioned himself acting and thought to himself, “If I had the right connections, I might have the chance to become an actor one day.” Upon his release, Bobby’s family was quick to support his aspirations. They felt acting offered a more positive path forward than returning to the streets or, even worse, prison. He also had the support of his friend and cousin, Duan Wagner, a former professional basketball player from the NBA, who believed in him. Bobby recalls asking him for $500 to get to NYC for an audition, and Duan didn’t hesitate to offer the funds that would help change Bobby’s life. Grateful for Duan’s support, Bobby embarked on a new journey into acting. The first role Bobby ever received was in a silent film for an NYU film student named Christian. The film, titled “The Revolving Door,” had Bobby playing the lead role of a gang leader. He remembers them shutting down the street in the Bronx to film his scene, which was shot in front of Big Pun’s mural.
Growing up, Bobby’s taste in TV and films was wide-ranging. From “Nightmare on Elm St.” to “South Central” and “COLORS,” his favorite films included “Boys In The Hood” and “Menace To Society.” His favorite TV shows were “Good Times,” “The Jefferson’s,” “The Cosby Show,” “A Different World,” and his personal favorite, “ROC,” starring Charles S. Dutton. Bobby was particularly drawn to the performances of actors like Omar Epps, Mekhi Phifer, and Denzel Washington, while his favorite actress was and still is Angela Bassett. He also holds Nia Long in high regard. He was captivated by both actresses, no matter the film or character they portrayed.
Roles that reflected his real life include a character he played in a TV series called “Chase Streets.” While the role was very close to his own experiences, it also led him to realize that he didn’t want to be pigeonholed into such roles. When cast, Bobby fully immerses himself in the character—his mind, body, and soul. It’s common for people on set, and even in his personal life, to refer to him by his character’s name. On the day before and the day of filming, he rehearses his lines, facial expressions, body language, and mannerisms until the director calls “ACTION.”
In the past, Bobby found communication with others to be challenging, but acting has helped him improve his skills. It’s also helped him relax and build confidence, becoming a better speaker—an essential skill for any actor. Over time, Bobby has honed his ability to “manipulate” his performance in front of the camera, to the point where people sometimes struggle to tell whether he’s acting or living his truth. Despite obstacles such as lacking proper representation and not being included among decision-makers, Bobby’s self-determination continues to open doors for him. He is currently working on a self-funded feature film titled “S.O.N.G.”, which stands for “Salvation Onto The Next Generation.” This film will be available on the TUBI platform. Additionally, Bobby is preparing to go into production for his script “Now We Even,” which will stream on both TUBI and Amazon Prime.

Speaking about his future, Bobby envisions himself in ten years as a successful, working actor who is also writing, producing, and starring in his own films. He hopes to inspire others in the acting community and be in a position to guide the next generation of actors through the challenges of the industry. He also imagines himself delivering an Oscar acceptance speech, with his wife by his side.
Bobby’s advice to the younger generation entering the acting field is simple: never give up on your dreams, regardless of how many doors seem to close. Don’t rely on favors from others to elevate your career. Instead, focus on refining your craft and build your legacy on your own terms—without compromising your values.
Bobby would like to extend a special thanks to his number one supporter, his wife Summer Rand. She helped him overcome a deep depression when he was ready to give up on acting. When Bobby doubted his ability to make it in the industry, she encouraged him to keep going. Summer reminded him that he didn’t need anyone but God, who was always by his side.
