According to a statement from his team, legendary artist Carlos Santana had a medical problem Tuesday night in Michigan.
Santana was “overtaken by heat exhaustion and dehydration,” his management company said in a statement posted on his official Facebook page. He was performing at the Pine Knob Music Theatre outdoor amphitheater in Clarkston, some 40 miles west of Detroit.
According to CNN meteorologist Robert Shackelford, Clarkston experienced temperatures as high as 90 degrees on Tuesday, which is almost 10 degrees higher than average.
In recordings made by fans, the 74-year-old performer can be seen halting his guitar playing while sitting in a stage corner.
While Santana was receiving medical attention, the stage crew held up a black cloth to cover the stage. The musician’s fans can be heard cheering for him as he is led off the stage in a video. Before departing the stage, the performer, according to Zee, waved to the spectators.
Following the tragedy, Santana sent a brief comment on Facebook to express his gratitude for his fans’ “kind prayers.”
“I forgot to eat and drink water,” he wrote, “therefore I lost my fluids and passed out.”
According to the statement, the musician’s scheduled Earth, Wind, and Fire performance on Wednesday night in Pennsylvania has been rescheduled.
On Monday, Santana performed as a part of CNN’s “The Fourth in America” concert.
Carlos established the band Santana, which created Latin jazz and rock & roll fusion. And together, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, they rose to fame. His Latin American and African rhythms were paired with blues-based melodies on percussion instruments that aren’t often employed in rock, like congas and timbales.
He began to get more popular and critical acclaim in the late 1990s. On the top 100 guitarists list published by Rolling Stone magazine in 2015, he came in at number 20. Along with his namesake band, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. He also has Ten Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards to his name.
