2020 required many businesses and entrepreneurs to pivot their focus and marketing efforts to keep the lights on. Entrepreneurs had to reassess their strengths and navigate how to market their goods and services to customers in a work from home environment. In many cases business owners are now offering additional virtual services in areas such as graphic design, marketing, coaching, etc. to bring in extra income. With these additional streams of revenue, some entrepreneurs are now faced with the challenge of how to market yourself separately from your company.
Wearing her signature sparkly turban and oversized glasses, Julianne Taylor graces the city of Charleston with a public persona that cannot help but stand out. And as a well-respected figure in the design community, she is known for her impeccable taste in style and home decor products. But more than her creative flair, the designer anchors much of her identity in her entrepreneurial side.
Before becoming a leading authority in the home decor and design industry, Julianne spent ten years overseas due to the nature of her husband’s career with General Motors. The couple had to jump from one city to another until they finally settled in Charleston.
During her time overseas, Julianne engaged in a home-based interior design business that prompted her to venture into the world of furniture design. And realizing how the latter sparked joy and passion within her, she created Taylor Burke Home—a luxury custom upholstery company geared toward designing products for interior designers around the country.
Julianne’s clear vision and aesthetic was noticed by other companies in the home decor arena, and she soon began getting approached to design products for them as well. Julianne made the strategic decision in 2015 to launch Julianne Taylor Style. A lifestyle umbrella company for product design, content creation, and business coaching for other creatives. She developed this personal brand to house all of her additional creative interests outside of Taylor Burke Home. She says, “this decision to create an entirely separate company allows me to grow my personal brand while Taylor Burke Home stands on its own legs with or without me. It allows for the opportunity to sell it off at some point if I wish to do so.”
She says, “a personal brand is built around you—your personality, your lifestyle, and your interests.” Creating the Julianne Taylor Style brand separate from Taylor Burke Home allows Julianne some flexibility to expand her service offerings as a business coach, speaker, content creator, and product designer.
Using her personal brand, Julianne has been able to step into other areas of design and services. What’s on the horizon? She says, “My first apparel capsule collection is launching in May, and I’m excited because fashion is the next natural step for me.”
Julianne walks the talk in that she teaches all business owners to “cast a wide net to create multiple streams of revenue.” She does the same by diversifying various projects and opportunities to create income.
Business coaching and subsequent e-books and speaking engagements have become a lucrative revenue stream for Julianne, and she has a passion for mentoring young creatives and aspiring entrepreneurs. She says, “I believe in paying it forward and sharing information. It can be the make it or break it difference for someone. That’s powerful. “ Julianne goes live regularly on the social media app TikTok and hosts rooms on Clubhouse to share business tips with other entrepreneurs.
Being someone who had to go through a couple of twists and turns before discovering her own destiny, she understands how hard it can be to start the journey. Thus, she wants to be a source of inspiration and motivation for those who are still figuring out what they want to do with their careers.
Julianne wants to remind everyone that life is too short to settle for anything less than the things that set the soul on fire. More important than choosing a career that can make ends meet, one should choose the path that makes them feel alive.
