Lady Gaga Confirms Role in Joker: Folie à Deux’

Lady Gaga announced that she will appear in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the eagerly awaited sequel to the 2019 movie “Joker,” in a new teaser video published on Thursday.

The first movie received 11 Academy Award nominations, including best picture, and earned over $1 billion in worldwide box office receipts, according to Box Office Mojo. The movie’s performance earned Joaquin Phoenix the best actor Oscar.

Phoenix will reprise his role as Arthur Fleck, a disturbed loner with clown-like features who failed as a comic and ended up in prison for killing his favorite late-night presenter (Robert De Niro) at the conclusion of the first movie. Also returning to helm the follow-up is Todd Phillips.

2024’s October 4 is the scheduled day for the film’s debut.

Even while the “Bad Romance” singer declined to reveal her character, it’s clear from the teaser that she’ll be playing the Batman villain Harley Quinn. In the video, Phoenix and Gaga are seen as silhouettes dancing to brassy renditions of the love song “Cheek to Cheek,” with Gaga sporting the iconic comic book character’s heart-on-cheeks appearance.

Further fueling rumors about Gaga’s Harley character is the term “Folie à Deux,” which describes a shared mental illness affecting two or more people. Since Harley’s debut in “Batman: The Animated Series” in the early 1990s, the Joker has been linked to her as an evil sidekick, molly, and romantic interest.Future comic books, movies, and video games have all featured the Joker abusing Harley, which gave the impression that their relationship was toxic.

The Harley persona has long been a favorite of comic book readers, but when Margot Robbie portrayed her in three Warner Bros. movies—”Suicide Squad” (2016), “Birds of Prey” (2017), and “The Suicide Squad” (2021)—she became more well-known among the general public. The third season of HBO Max’s animated “Harley Quinn” series premiered on July 28 and stars Kaley Cuoco as the lead.

Gaga was nominated for best actress and lost to Renée Zellweger for her performance in “Judy,” but she won an Oscar for her song in “A Star Is Born.” Many people criticized Gaga for not receiving an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani in the 2021 movie “House of Gucci,” calling it a snub for the actress.
