Loving fashion is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it is the ultimate vehicle of self-expression. On the other, it is an expense that can feel impossible to keep up with. Trend cycles are shorter than ever, and the pressure to always have something new to wear is higher due to social media. Rotate is an app that can solve all these problems. The peer-to-peer clothing rental app lets you rent clothing from like-minded fashionistas nationwide while earning money from your own closet.

There are plenty of ways to resell clothes. Apps like DePop and Poshmark or stores like Crossroads and Buffalo Exchange let you sell your clothing to make some extra cash. However, no service allowed users to retain their wardrobe and rent it out: enter Rotate Your Closet. The app uses a peer-to-peer system similar to Airbnb. Users upload pieces from their wardrobe that they want to keep but are not currently wearing to any upcoming occasions, events, trips, etc. Another user (renter) can browse options and rent clothing items for the listed price, and at the end of the rental period, items are then returned to the original owner. This service is perfect for special occasions, events, or everyday moments, and the clothes you purchase for a specific occasion can be saved for the right time to wear again. Many users found their prom, bachelorette party, or even wedding guest dresses this way.

The co-founders of Rotate, Hannah Graves and Jessie Somekh, have plenty of experience borrowing clothes. The two met on a trip to Barcelona in 2011 and bonded over their shared love of fashion. They frequently borrowed each other’s clothes throughout their stay and kept in touch over the next nine years by admiring their outfits on social media. When the pandemic hit in 2020, they were struck with inspiration. They lived across the country from each other, Somekh in Los Angeles and Graves in Boston, but they wanted to be able to swap clothing, just like they did in Spain. The two realized that many other people must also want to do this, and Rotate was born.

Graves and Somekh combined their love of fashion and experience in tech and business to launch the app. Graves is a former graphic design and business student with a background in advertising and social media marketing. Somekh has a degree in engineering and worked in AI/ML product experience at Nordstrom, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. Between the two, Somekh and Graves had all the skills to launch Rotate to great success. The app was mentioned on The Today Show as an example of a great side hustle. Somekh and Graves cite the reviews and anecdotes they hear every day from satisfied customers as their greatest achievement to date.

Rotate gives users a new way to view fashion. It doesn’t have to be a strain on your wallet to look great in trendy new styles, and you can even make money while doing it. If you have a special occasion coming up or just need something to spice up your wardrobe, jump on Rotate to find your perfect fit.
