SpaceX’s Starlink Redefines Connectivity, Brings High-Speed Broadband Internet Even to Remote Areas

Even with the advent of technology, the divide between people with access to the internet and those who don’t is still apparent. While half of the planet has been wired to the latest happenings and updates of literally anything across the globe, the other half remains in the shadows. But that’s all about to change as SpaceX introduces its impressively engineered high-speed, low latency broadband internet—Starlink.

SpaceX, founded by renowned entrepreneur Elon Musk, is continually bringing people closer to a world equipped with the finest technology it has to offer. Besides its advancements in aerospace manufacturing and space transportation, including the efforts to bring life on Mars, SpaceX also aims to radically impact human life on Earth. In 2015, SpaceX launched the development of Starlink.

The internet, as people know it, is a powerhouse of information. The discovery of the internet brought people together as it allowed the free exchange of ideologies and served as a channel for highlighting cultures, issues, world events, etc. But the challenge of bringing internet connectivity to rural and remote communities has hindered many from participating in worldwide communication.

Latency refers to the gap between data traveling from one point to another within a millisecond. Traditional satellites usually sit at around 22,200 miles above the earth’s surface. SpaceX wants to radically reduce the distance by launching satellites at only 342 miles above the surface. The closer the satellites, the faster the connection is. With Starlink placing its satellites 60 times closer to Earth, users can enjoy a higher performance in activities like video calls and online gaming.

With its low latency, Starlink is ideally built to serve even the remotest areas in the world, regardless of weather, topography, or location, because it is unbounded by the traditional ground infrastructure commonly used for establishing internet connection today. Starlink is capable of providing 150Mbps to theoretically any place on the planet at relatively affordable prices.

Starlink is currently delivering initial beta services to both domestic and international users. Intending to equip the majority of the world by the end of 2021, SpaceX has continually launched satellites into space. In total, Starlink aims to have 12,000 satellites working by the end of the year. The company is also continually installing more ground stations and is working on improving its network of software, data speed, latency, and uptime.

Besides speed, affordability, and inclusivity, Starlink also aims to understand the night sky. Working closely with leading astronomers worldwide, Starlink seeks to have a better understanding of the night sky to incorporate engineering changes to reduce the brightness of its satellites. Starlink satellites are darkened explicitly so as not to disturb the beauty of astronomy.

Thanks to SpaceX’s extensive history in building rockets and spacecraft, Starlink makes it possible to deploy a game-changing broadband internet system that will radically lift the connectivity divide among communities. With the goal of uniting the world through fast, reliable, and affordable internet, SpaceX once again brings people closer to the future.
