Actor Wasim Azeez, recognized for his remarkable performances in productions like “No Service” and “Treading,” is now set to stun audiences with his latest venture – the sci-fi short film, “Alone, Alone, Alone on the Wide, Wide Sea.” Filmed across New York City, this dystopian narrative unveils a future where people depend on an app that can erase distressing memories, a theme that resonates in today’s technology-reliant society.

The story revolves around two brothers, Rajesh and Shiva, with Azeez brilliantly portraying the older sibling, Rajesh. As a grieving son at a significant crossroads, Azeez’s performance is slated to be both powerful and poignant.

The character of Rajesh necessitated the use of a distinct Tamilian dialect native to Chennai, India. Azeez mastered the language nuances with the help of vocal and dialect coach, Shenbagaraj Ganesalingam, known for his association with Oscar-winning Indian music producer AR Rahman. Azeez’s commitment to his role extended to his physical transformation too. The actor gained 15 pounds, bringing an evident contrast between his character, an overweight artist, and his athletic, tech-savvy brother.

Adding another layer to his performance, Azeez invested over 40 hours studying the behavioral patterns of trauma victims and those battling substance abuse. He drew inspiration from various movies set in a dystopian future to add depth to his character.

Alongside language mastery and character study, Azeez trained with Carolyn Payton Parker, a renowned stunt coordinator, to execute the intense action sequences. As a trained actor with prior stage combat and sword fighting experience, Azeez adapted swiftly to the demanding choreography, ensuring an exhilarating visual experience.

The film, created by Shrevy Venkatesh and produced by the Lighthouse Ladies, was a year in the making before Tasveer, a non-profit organization advocating for South Asian representation in the film industry, provided the fiscal support. Directed by Anvita Gattani, an NYU graduate and member of the Oscar Academy’s Gold Rising program, the film represents a significant stride for South Asian representation, boasting a majority South Asian crew both on and off the camera.

After months of auditions, Casting Director Sonia Werner identified the perfect fit for the demanding role of Rajesh in Azeez. Fluent in Tamil, Hindi, and English, possessing strong vocal skills, and experienced in stage combat, Azeez met the exhaustive requirements impeccably.

Scheduled to premiere at the Tasveer South Asian Film Festival and other film festivals later this year, “Alone, Alone, Alone on the Wide, Wide Sea” promises a narrative like no other. This film stands as a testament to Azeez’s skill and dedication to his craft.
