Drug addiction is a very real problem that people commonly see but do not pay close attention to. There are misconceptions around individuals struggling with addiction, such as that they lack moral principles, and they are drug addicts by will, but what people fail to consider is that drug addiction is a very real medical problem that cannot be overcome by a strong will alone. Brandon Chastang is no stranger to the struggles faced by drug addicts, and he uses his platform to raise awareness of the reality faced by these people.
Brandon Chastang is also known as BMcFly, a meaningful name with the message “Being Motivated Comes From Loving Yourself.”. He is a motivational speaker, activist, and sober messenger who brings awareness to the struggles faced by addicts. Drug addiction is a dark hole that many fall into, and for many, this hole is impossible to get out of without proper guidance and support.
Even for the motivational speaker, it was only when he admitted himself to inpatient rehab and underwent 30 days of treatment that he could fully get out of that dark hole. Since he admitted himself into Armes Acres in January 2018, he has lived in sobriety for three years. Today, he reenacts real-life scenarios through skits to spread awareness about the struggles of addiction and the hardships of trying to get out of it.
Gathering over 20 million views on social media for only 15 powerful one-minute skits, Brandon Chastang has reached many people wanting to escape addiction but not knowing where to start. It is often said that the first steps are the hardest, and with an overwhelmingly positive response and a large volume of people asking for help to get out of addiction, the addict-turned-mentor gains great fulfillment in helping people begin their journey back to sobriety.
Brandon Chastang has seen addiction up close even as a child, as he was born to parents addicted to crack cocaine in 1981. Despite the harsh environment he grew up in, his grandmother planted the importance of education deep inside him. May 2004 saw him graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.
It is ironic that he never fell into addiction despite his parentage, only to fall victim to it after graduating. Still, that is precisely what happened, as barely two months after he graduated, he got shot and was prescribed Percocet to ease the pain. Percocet is a combination drug with acetaminophen and an opioid component—oxycodone. That single unfortunate event led to over 14 years of addiction.
People tend to shy away from sensitive topics, but what should be noted is that people with sensitive issues are the ones that need the most help, and simply lending an open ear can mean the world. Brandon Chastang opens up this particular can of worms in the hopes of reaching people who are quietly struggling alone.
From a drug addict, criminal, deadbeat father, and manipulator to a strong man with strong ideals and a genuine desire to pull people out of the pit they found themselves, Brandon Chastang is changing the lives of the people he meets. Learn more about him on his website and Instagram account.
