Insira is a 28-year-old artist from Honolulu, Hawaii. After years of trying to figure out his sound with other producers to no avail, Insira decided to take matters into his own hands. The multi-faceted musician has mastered all the roles expected in the music industry, proving that it is more than possible for an artist to distribute music independently.
By transforming the unique challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic into self-discovery and growth opportunities, Insira developed the tools he needed to make a name for himself in the music industry. The artist needed to exercise extra precaution during the pandemic because of his mother’s ongoing battle with cancer. The doctors advised him to stay in his room and quarantine to protect his mother, who is more at risk of catching the dreaded virus. Looking to spend his time productively, Insira decided to further his music education by investing in actual production classes.
Soon after, Insira put in more than 60 hours of work each week, learning how to mix and master at an industry standard. Some days, he would sit in his room the entire day writing bars using spreadsheets. Insira was determined to build a firm foundation for his art.
The ability to approach potential mentors and establish relationships plays a significant role in Insira’s growing self-made career. Working under the assumption that people are willing to share their talents and expertise, Insira picked up his phone and started talking with producers. The insights he gained from his fellow producers helped him build a home studio from scratch in his bedroom. Inspired by his conversation with talents spanning genres and eras, coupled with his new home studio, Insira saw a spike in his productivity. He soon produced over 20 tracks and completed his up-and-coming album Pieces of Myself, scheduled for release soon.
Pieces of Myself is an apt album name, reflecting Insira’s ongoing exploration of his identity and artistry. Even his choice of stage name—Insira—is a deliberate expression of his journey toward self-discovery. He initially used the name exclusively for his characters in video games—his alter ego to escape to the virtual world. By choosing the name Insira, the artist brings his virtual identity into the physical world. Acknowledging the different parts of his personality reveals his developing awareness and maturity.
Insira refuses to be constrained by the limitations imposed by society. When he first started as a musician, he was told that the only way to be successful was to stick to one genre. However, this went against his belief that people can gain the capacity to distribute music independently, especially with today’s technology. Insira transcends genres and roles in his pursuit of standing out in the saturated music industry. For Insira, the most important thing is to create and produce high-quality music.
In addition to singing, writing songs, rapping, freestyling, producing, and mixing, Insira also learned the business side of music. Using his strong understanding of marketing and sales, Insira launched a clothing line to support his album. Recently, Grimes Magazine put him on the tenth spot in the Top 20 Indie Artists list.
