“Music from Virginia, for everyone.” That simple tagline captures everything about Theocles, a singer-songwriter whose warmth and community-first approach have made him a rising voice in the Virginia music scene.
From Charlottesville Roots to College Recordings
Raised in Charlottesville surrounded by folk, bluegrass, and Americana, Theocles grew up in a musical household. His mother, a singer-songwriter herself, recalls him humming melodies before he could speak. That early instinct followed him through childhood and into the College of William & Mary, where he enrolled as an Economics major but spent most of his energy immersed in music.
At William & Mary, he taught himself guitar, sang with choir and a cappella groups, and wrote songs late into the night at jam sessions and campus parties. Those efforts paid off when the university funded the recording of his debut EP, “Short Stories.”
Chasing Music Across State Lines
After graduation, Theocles moved to Philadelphia and then Minnesota for work, but he never stopped playing. Open mics, bar gigs, intimate house shows, festivals, and street corners all became stages. Any chance to perform, he took it with a smile.
Even the arrival of COVID couldn’t stop him. During lockdowns, Theocles invited neighbors to sit on their lawns and porches while he performed from his driveway. That stubborn commitment to sharing music, no matter the circumstances, became a defining part of who he is as an artist.
A Full-Time Leap and a Debut Album
In December 2020, with encouragement from family, friends, and a growing group of fans, Theocles made the decision to pursue music full time. He returned to Charlottesville, partnered with community music organization The Front Porch, and released new singles: “Pressure,” “Suburbia,” and “Johnny & Me.”
Back in the folk scene that shaped him, he formed deep connections with local musicians who pushed his creativity forward. That period produced his first full-length studio album, “Roses.” The record showcased his range, moving from the bouncy New Orleans energy of “Don’t Blame It” to the emotionally devastating “Wait For You to Wake Up,” written from the perspective of a beloved pet dog. The local success of “Roses” opened doors to performances at venues like the historic Southern Music Hall and the iconic Ting Pavilion, solidifying his place as a central figure in Charlottesville’s music community.
Richmond, “Fiddle Baby,” and a Growing Fanbase
Eager to explore new territory, Theocles relocated to Richmond in 2024 and dove into the city’s rapidly expanding music scene. There, he recorded and filmed a music video for “Fiddle Baby,” an energetic folk-pop track rooted in the bluegrass traditions of his hometown. The single became a fan favorite, earned regular play on local radio, and launched his first tour up the East Coast alongside saxophonist Jake Vanaman of the acclaimed jam band Kendall Street Company.
He followed “Fiddle Baby” with the X.O.S. EP, four catchy pop songs tracing the arc of finding and losing love. The collection ranges from the tender “Moonlit Windows” to the hip-hop-styled frustration of “Miss Independent,” and it provided the foundation for his second solo tour in Fall 2025.
That same year brought unexpected collaborations. Charlottesville-based artists and producers McGwire, ASTRSK*, and Wülf Boi, who had built a strong following in the niche Nerdcore music space, recognized his talent and brought him into their orbit. Together, they performed sold-out 1,700-capacity shows opening for platinum artist The Living Tombstone, and he co-wrote, arranged, and performed “MAIN ATTRACTION!!” with McGwire, earning notable online attention.
What Fans Can Expect in 2026
Theocles shows no signs of slowing down. His new backing band, “Theocles & the Muses,” is making highly anticipated debuts across Virginia. In July, he heads into the studio to record “Grow,” a new EP that returns to his folk roots with intimate, catchy songwriting. Fans can also look forward to an original holiday track, “Gingerbread Home,” arriving in December, along with a dramatic new ballad featuring McGwire.
Through it all, his philosophy stays the same. He regularly uses his connections in the Richmond and Charlottesville scenes to organize fundraising shows, offer stage time to new artists, and perform on street corners simply for the joy of it. Whether the venue is a local bar or an amphitheater, a living room or a crowd of a thousand, he remains committed to making the world a little brighter, one song at a time. Fans can follow his journey and find upcoming shows on Spotify, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook.
