As Zaria Smith prepares for her next year at Notre Dame, the 19-year-old architecture major is already making waves both inside and outside the classroom. Known for her sharp intellect and ambition, she’s also making a name for herself as a style icon among her peers. Her fashion choices outside of school are bold yet practical, perfectly balancing creativity with the demands of her busy college schedule.
In this interview, Zaria shares her five back-to-school looks for college students, emphasizing how fashion can be a form of self-expression and a tool for building confidence.
1. The Tailored Blazer Look: “Confidence and Comfort”
“There’s something about a well-fitted blazer that instantly makes me feel more confident,” Zaria begins. She explains that a blazer can be paired with just about anything—jeans, dresses, or even joggers—making it a versatile piece for any wardrobe.
Her favorite back-to-school look involves a structured black or navy blazer over a simple white t-shirt paired with high-waisted jeans and ankle boots. “It’s polished but not overdone. Plus, it’s perfect for class presentations or study groups when you want to look put-together without sacrificing comfort.”
Zaria emphasizes that the key to pulling off this look is the fit. “A tailored blazer, even if it’s thrifted or bought second-hand, makes all the difference. It’s an investment in your confidence.”
2. Athleisure Vibes: “Practical, but Make it Fashion”
With a busy college schedule that includes long hours in the studio and rushing across campus for classes, Zaria values clothing that offers both style and practicality. “I love athleisure for busy days,” she says, referring to the trend of mixing athletic wear with everyday fashion.
Zaria’s go-to athleisure outfit includes sleek black leggings, a cropped hoodie, and trendy sneakers. “I like to add a pop of color with my sneakers or accessories. You can throw on a denim jacket or puffer vest when it’s cooler outside,” she advises.
What makes this look stand out is its versatility. “Whether I’m heading to a study session or grabbing coffee with friends, I feel comfortable and stylish. Plus, it’s perfect for when I want to hit the gym after class.”
3. Vintage Denim & Graphic Tees: “A Nod to the ’90s”
Zaria has always had an appreciation for vintage fashion, particularly from the ’90s. One of her favorite casual looks involves a pair of high-waisted vintage denim jeans paired with a bold graphic tee. “There’s something timeless about denim, especially when it’s vintage,” she says. “It has a relaxed, carefree vibe that’s perfect for college life.”
She suggests thrifting as a way to find unique pieces, sharing that most of her favorite jeans are thrifted or hand-me-downs. “I love adding my own flair with accessories—like a belt, chunky jewelry, or a retro headband.”
The graphic tee, often featuring band logos or playful slogans, adds personality to the look. “It’s a reflection of who I am and what I’m into at the moment,” Zaria says. “Plus, it’s an easy way to strike up a conversation with classmates who share similar interests.”
4. The Statement Jumpsuit: “Effortless Chic”
When Zaria needs to look stylish in a pinch, she reaches for a jumpsuit. “It’s a one-and-done outfit that takes no time to put together but makes you look so put-together,” she explains.
Her favorite is a wide-legged jumpsuit in a bold color, like mustard yellow or emerald green. “I can throw on a pair of sandals or platform sneakers, and I’m ready to go. It’s perfect for those days when I’m running late but still want to make an impression.”
Zaria adds that jumpsuits work for all body types. “The key is finding one that fits your body well and makes you feel good. It’s effortless but stylish—perfect for transitioning from class to a night out with friends.”
5. Layering for Fall: “Function Meets Fashion”
As fall approaches, Zaria loves to experiment with layering, a style trick that not only keeps her warm but also allows for creative mixing and matching. “I’m all about oversized sweaters layered over mini skirts or dresses,” she says. “It’s fun to play with textures and colors when the weather cools down.”
Zaria’s favorite fall look is a chunky knit sweater layered over a plaid mini skirt paired with knee-high boots. “It’s a fun mix of cozy and edgy,” she explains. “Layering also allows you to wear summer pieces longer into the season, which is great for a college budget.”
For an extra touch of personality, Zaria likes to add tights or patterned socks. “It’s the small details that really pull an outfit together,” she says with a smile.
Through these five go-to looks, Zaria shows that fashion can be practical, expressive, and empowering. For her, getting dressed in the morning is more than just putting on clothes—it’s about showcasing her personality and building the confidence to face the challenges of a demanding academic schedule. Whether she’s presenting a project in class or hanging out with friends, Zaria’s style is a reflection of her creativity and the self-assurance she’s developed as a young woman.
As she heads back to campus, Zaria’s message is clear: wear what makes you feel your best, and don’t be afraid to experiment.
